How it works

  1. 4 minutes per degree. The Earth turns 360° a day, so the sun crosses one degree of longitude every four minutes.
  2. Zones round it off. A time zone is 15° wide, and every clock in it shows the time at its central meridian.
  3. Up to 30 minutes out. The farther you are from that line, the more your clock and the sun disagree — half an hour at the zone’s edge.

Uses idealised 15° zones and mean solar time. Real zone borders, daylight saving and the sun’s seasonal wobble aren’t modelled.
